Have you made a point to talk to a veteran today?
At my local hospital, there are various labels affixed to each employees nametag, denoting their specialty. If you attend conferences for work, these “ribbons” are similar to those for sponsors, speakers, breakout hosts, etc. That way, you don’t mistake your baby-faced heart surgeon for a candy-striper! For example, at the hospital, you’ll see a range of professions, RN, OT, MD, etc., but also Veteran.
We love to see these because they’re a great talking point. Especially when you see the Veteran ribbon. Take a minute to thank them for their service and ask if they mind talking about it. You can ask where they were stationed, if they saw active combat, what’s their favorite part of their military job or what has been the easiest to translate to civilian service in a hospital.
Another way to honor a veteran is to VOTE. They stood in harm’s way. All that’s asked of you is to stand before a computer screen with your index finger. It’s an embarrassingly easy way to recognize the sacrifice of so many neighbors.
Happy serving,
