This week’s advice is what we’ve told candidates and incumbents for years - AND there’s a lot of space for it right now - be a resource for neighbors to build community right where they are.
EVERYONE is trying so hard right now to combat the epidemic of loneliness, isolation, and division.
Let’s say a city or school or church or a local civic group plans an event that sounds like fun, but it’s new, or you’ve never been.
Now what if someone you knew reminded you about it? Even if it was someone you only vaguely know from your HOA.
You show up strangers and leave a little less strange, and maybe even make new friends in the process, whether it’s the neighbors or others you meet.
Now - what if no one shows up, or very few. The organization bought too much food, or didn’t have enough business to make it worth it for the vendors. That event never happens again.
How can YOU serve? Be a resource - share local events on your social media outlets, specifically mention if you plan to attend, or are looking for a group to go with you.
Post to your City/School/Civic/Church/HOA’s Facebook page, NextDoor app, or other local news source, neighborhood listserve, etc.
Having that simple reminder from someone with a familiar name from the neighborhood gives someone at least one reason to go.
If they’re hearing about events from a variety of sources, all of those count toward bringing communities together and making our little corners of the world a bit friendlier.
What great events are planned around you in the coming weeks and how can you share it with others?
Happy serving,
Stephanie Sharp
