Our first Serve60Sharp Guest Idea from Cindy Green!
A few weeks ago, I attended a fundraiser for a friend running for office, and brought my 14-year old daughter along for the ride. It was a beautiful garden party at the home of a national-award-winning gardener, on a beautiful early fall evening with more than 50 attendees – most of whom have known my daughter since she was born.
A week or so later, I received a thank you note from the candidate, along with another note addressed to my daughter. Anna’s note thanked her for being at the event and how glad the Cindy was to see her. This made my daughter’s day! Not only did she get mail hand-addressed to her, but with a greeting making it plain her presence was noticed and enjoyed.
That’s a double-whammy for impressions. My daughter will remember it, what Cindy is running for, and that she’s nice. As the parent, I was seriously impressed by a candidate who would think to add a separate note to a child. It may be a while before my daughter can vote, but her reaction will stick in my head when I’m at the ballot box this November.
(In case you were wondering, she can register to vote in 1,090 days. Just in time for the November 2026 general election!)
Especially when kids at these events are rare and usually a function of parental scheduling conflicts, take the extra minute to make them feel welcome, even after the fact.
Happy serving!
